Looking for 1,000 true fans

I have heard this before...that any artist that is hoping to make a living only needs 1,000 true fans.  It has been a number I have kept in the back of  my mind and you my writing friend should too.

The Technium writes,

A creator, such as an artist, musician, photographer, craftsperson, performer, animator, designer, videomaker, or author - in other words, anyone producing works of art - needs to acquire only 1,000 True Fans to make a living.

We all have a goal now, my young writing friends. 1,000 is the golden number.

What in the world is a super fan?
A True Fan is defined as someone who will purchase anything and everything you produce. They will drive 200 miles to see you sing. They will buy the super deluxe re-issued hi-res box set of your stuff even though they have the low-res version. They have a Google Alert set for your name. They bookmark the eBay page where your out-of-print editions show up. They come to your openings. They have you sign their copies.
When I read that I had to think, who have I been a super fan for?  What artist do I follow and track?
Sorry I got all distracted...watching the owls come in.  I do love me some Harry Potter.  Think I will put on the movie marathon...it just makes me all happy inside.
